Why it Matters

Having access to psychiatric care increases the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, which reduces suicide rates and poor mental health outcomes.

Indicator Summary

  • New England states perform the best on this indicator, with three states ranking in the top five (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island).
  • Mid-Atlantic states also perform relatively well compared to other regions.
  • Asian/Pacific Islander groups are most likely to live in communities across the nation with better access to psychiatric care, with 95% living in counties achieving the HOPE goal for population–to-psychiatrist ratio.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native populations are least likely to live in communities with adequate psychiatric care, followed by White populations, with only 61% and 75%, respectively, living in counties achieving the HOPE goal on this measure.
  • Individuals living in states located in the Plains are least likely to have adequate access to psychiatric care.
